Here is the anonymous poem that first introduced the students to the story of Josie Langmaid:
"The Murder of Josie A. Langmaid"

It was in the morning very cool,
When Josie started for her school,
Oftimes this lonely wood she passed,
She little thought this time her last,
But as she passed this lonely spot,
Her by her clothes this monster caught,
Then to the woods he took his flight,
And there in secret he took her life.
The father watched in tender care
Until the evening shades drew near.
His darling child did not appear.
All through the forest search began.
The father found to his surprise,
His murdered child before his eyes.
The father fell upon her breast,
Saying, "Is my darling Josie dead."
And there in anguish he did mourn
Until he was carried to his home.
Her head was from her body torn.
Her clothing crimson with the gore,
And on her body marks did show
Some cruel hand had dealt the blow.
The wretch who did this wicked deed
Was one LePage, a chopper by trade.
It was at Concord he was tried
And to the last his crime denied.
But he was guilty found to be.
The judge said, "Death is your penalty."
It is these and more such laws we'll make
'Til such crime shall cease in the Granite State.
